'Bravo': EC Chief von der Leyen Witnesses India's UPI Infrastructure
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen witnessed the cutting-edge digital payments infrastructure of India during her two-day visit to the country. The EC chief was shown a live demonstration of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system. In the video, she was seen closely observing the transaction process being facilitated by EU Ambassador to India Hervé Delphin, who explained the rapid process of the UPI payments system. "Every day in India, the number of digital transactions made through UPI is equivalent to the population of the European Union", the PM had said. In February 2024, the NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) launched a UPI payment mechanism in France, starting with the Eiffel Tower. The initiative, in partnership with French e-commerce company Lyra Network, enables Indian tourists to buy tickets for the iconic monument by paying through UPI. Later the payment system was also launched at Paris' historic department store Galeries Lafayette.
