MG Windsor EV Road Test Review, Range Test

The Windsor is currently the best selling EV in India and that has been a crucial success for JSW MG with its first product after the JV but why has it been popular with buyers plus is it worth the hype? We had our first drive some months back but now it is for the big test to see how the range is over a few days along with the driving experience. You can get the Windsor with the BAAS battery rental agreement for a much lower price but while with the battery, the top-end version is Rs 15.5 lakh as tested here. Exterior The Windsor is near 4.3m but the design is unique with a lot of space being concentrated for the wheelbase- which is the space we use. Hence, it has a longer wheelbase at mm despite its compact size. However, design wise, it is unique and cool with being a mix of different segments- hence it is called a crossover. It is based on an electric platform too which has benefits while overall it looks different with plenty of appeal. MG Windsor Interior, Features And Space The Windsor is more about the interior while here you get pop out handles which are convenient since you do not have to grab them out in the first place. Elsewhere, the cabin feels quite premium and feels spacious. The windscreen is vast and stretches forward while there are tons of storage space everywhere below, at the centre console and cupholders at the side. Even the door pockets are big. The other talked about factor is the huge laptop sized screen which has controls to every function- quitter literally. The screen resolution is very good and despite looking complex, some of the important functions are placed below while there is a swipe down function with some important ones too. However, everything is placed there for controls meaning the glass roof bind, ORVM, drive modes and pretty much everything is bundled up here! This we think is a bit too much for sure but thankfully air con controls are physical- the only ones in the cabin. While no soft touch, the materials and the overall design is classy and minimalistic. It feels premium. We also like the door handle design plus the speaker grille. The feature list is huge, with cooled seats, in-built apps, a large glass roof, nice 9-speaker audio system, 360 degree camera (display quality is quite good) and more. Then there is the space on offer which is huge with the rear seat being the best seat thanks to the 135 degree recline along with the oodles of space inside. There is a flat floor, individual headrests too while overall this is a superb chauffeur driven experience. Even the boot is big while not having a powered tailgate. MG Windsor Driving Experience, Range And Charging The Windsor comes with a single battery pack which is 37.9 kWh with 330km range. The power on offer is 136hp and 200Nm. Like the MG Comet, getting in and driving does not require a push button start while on the go, the car is smooth along with  linear power delivery. There are drive modes and regen modes, but even in its sportiest setting, acceleration is linear and not very fast but smooth- which is what people want. Unlike the Comet, the drive mode restarts in standard normal every time but eco is where you squeeze out the maximum range. Speaking of which you will 250-300km on the basis of your driving but we droe in Eco with less throttle inputs which results in a range which is near 300- with the highest regen. Normally, you can expect near 250km. It is also light and easy to drive with the small steering being easy to operate. The ride quality at low speeds is a bit stiff but ground clearance is superb-even with 4 passengers and luggage. The gear selector is a stalk and that might take getting used to but is easy to operate once you get the hang of it. Charging was easy with the eHUB which removes the need to have multiple apps for charging. For the price, the Windsor has plenty of appeal and a few days left us impressed mainly with its space, range and the technology on offer. Yes, there are too many functions on the touchscreen which isn't convenient and the range could have been more with a larger battery pack but for city use, it is more than enough. Hence, it is a more appealing alternative to SUVs or MPVs at this price and not just an EV-which is why it is becoming popular.
